Bae Joo Hyun (배주현) professionally known as Irene (Korean:아이린) is a South Korean singer and dnacer under SM Entertainment. She is a member of girl group Red Velvet and its sub-unit Irene & Seulgi. She debuted with them in Aug 1, 2014 with their single "Happiness".

Early Life[]
Irene was born on March 29, 1991 in Daegu, South Korea. She attended Haknam High School.
Beginnings with Red Velvet[]
On Dec 9, 2013, SM Entertainment announced 3 new rookies, Irene, Lami, and Jaehyun from their project SMRookies.[1] A day later on Dec 10, a video was revealed of Irene, revealing her face and visuals.[2] After the launch of their SMRookies website, SR14G (“SM Rookies 2014 Girls”) rookie members Seulgi and Irene danced to song "Be Natural" originally by label-mate girl group S.E.S.[3] She made her debut with the group on August 1, 2014 with the single "Happiness" as their leader, lead dancer, vocalist, visual, and rapper.
2016-present; Solo activities[]
On Dec 19, Irene and Park Bo-gum were MC's for Music Bank. On July 25, 2016 Irene made her acting debut on Women at a Game Company as the female lead, Areum.[4] After Park Bo-gum and Irene stopped being MC's for Music Bank, they reunited on April 27, 2017 and continued being special MC's for the show.[5] On April 21, 2020 SPOTV News reported that Irene and Seulgi were to make debut as a unit, and were in the final stage for preparation for their album. SM later confirmed the unit's debut, but said the debut date would be finalized.[6] On May 27, at midnight KST a Twitter update announced the name of their comeback being "Monster" and that the unit name would be called Red Velvet - Irene & Seulgi along with the logo being revealed as well.[7]
